It's normal to feel a little apprehensive about beginning counselling and you may have some questions about whether it's right for you. Take a look at the FAQ below and if you can't find an answer to your question, send me an inquiry via one of the methods on the Contact page.
Many people come to counselling sessions when they experience challenges in their life that feel unmanageable. Sometimes that can happen after a painful experience such as losing a loved one, a relationship breakdown or ending a career. Other times, it can be a long-endured difficulty that has become overwhelming.
Counselling sessions allow you to be heard in a non-judgemental environment and release pain that you may have been holding in. You'll learn strategies that can help you approach your challenges in a different light and make new and more positive choices.
A counsellor can't 'fix' you. Instead, what they can do is arm you with the tools and guidance you need to move through your difficulties towards the peace, happiness and satisfaction you deserve.
One of the most important elements in extracting the most benefit from counselling sessions is feeling that your counsellor is a good fit for you. You should feel comfortable enough to speak and be understood, and to know that you're not 'broken' or 'crazy'. You're the expert of your life and the right counsellor will act as your 'guide from the side'. They'll help you to bring your experiences to the surface in order to examine and work through them.
In some cases, there may be a need for referral to an additional medical professional wherever we determine that it's in your best interests.
There's no set rule around how frequently you can or should attend counselling. Many people choose to begin with one session every two weeks as it allows them to integrate the concepts into everyday life in the space between visits.
Others, such as those with more pressing concerns or who feel that regular sessions together would be even more supportive, prefer weekly.
We can discuss your best frequency during your first session if you're unsure of what would suit your circumstances. We'll also review it together in your third session to make sure that it's working for you.
There's no one-size-fits-all time frame for counselling. The aim is always to get you to the best possible frame of mind in the shortest possible time.
Some people can see significant improvements in just a few sessions while others can find that counselling becomes a regular part of their life for months or years.
